November 11 is my birthday. I was at this event in 1947 on my 7th birthday. My Uncle Jim was a drummer in the Army Band and he was able to get my parents and my sister and I to be there for this ceremony. My uncle continued in the military and in 1963, he was lead drummer in the same band and was features in the funeral procession for President Kennedy’s funeral service and his drum and other items from that day are within the Jackie Kennedy exhibit in the First ladies section in the Smithsonian!
I have a photograph from my mom’s school trip to Washington in April 1937 and there is one picture at the Tomb of the unknown Soldier that appears to be Harry S Truman. This was, of course, before he became President. It really looks like him. Holding a hat, wearing glasses, etc. Is there someplace that I can email this to you to confirm whether or not this is Mr. Truman. There are a couple of women with him and he are standing very near the tomb while the sentry is walking on by. I know that nobody is to approach the actual tomb unless they are on official duty etc. Please reply as to where I can email this picture and to let me know if this is really him. I will await your reply! Thank you!
You can email a scan of the photo to the library’s main email box: Truman.Library@nara.gov
I gave them a heads-up to look out for your email.
